chlorobiphenyl曾经在大规模的工业建设中发挥着重要作用，由于其性质稳定，长期被广泛用于各生产领域。
chlorobiphenyl几乎不溶于水，一旦自然水体受到其污染，便会产生长远影响。另外，大部分chlorobiphenyl最终都被沉积物吸附，因此沉积物是其主要的环境归宿。再有，它还可能通过饮水途径对居民产生致癌风险。
