密度是单位体积物质的质量;比重是液体或固体与水或者气体与空气在规定温度和压力时的密度比。水和空气在一定温度和压力时的密度是已知的，因此，在规定条件下的比重和密度是可以互换的。物质的密度或比重与物质的成分有关，所以常用密度计和比重计来检测如酒精、石油产品、酸碱溶液、煤    气和天然气等的品质。密度计还可用于这类产品生产和加工过程的监测和控制。
