密度计是可以用来直接测量液体的密度的，而不需要公式ρ=m/v。密度计无论放在那种液体中都是漂浮的，这是一种平衡状态，因此它的重力始终等于它受到的浮力。 它放入不同的液体里，浸入液体的体积是不一样的，但是它受到的浮力都是一样的，都等于它的重力。可以根据密度计上的刻度来直接读出所放入的液体的密度：把它放在密度比较大的液体里，那它浸入液体的体积就小点，把它放在密度比较小的液体里，那它浸入液体的体积就大点。这样的话密度计的刻度从下往上的示数是越来越小的，这个和量筒正好相反。

密度计的测量范围是0—3，液体密度计在物理实验中使用的液体密度计，是一种测量液体密度的仪器。
